We woke this morning to a great surprise: Chelsea Handler was wearing our t-shirt. We love her. And then she started talking to Jessica Biel about the beauty of getting to know one’s vagina. Glory.
Turns out that the PSA is for the Tryst Network: a sex positive resource by global nonprofit WCG in collaboration with actress and activist, Jessica Biel. The mission: To improve the sexual health IQ of women and their partners through fun, reliable and empowering online content.
We spent some hours exploring this new beautiful site and found some cool resources on hand for women and men. From HuffPo’s Cliteracy -- an interactive timeline of the clitoris through history -- to Period Pieces -- a hilarious performance art catalog of women dealing with menses throughout the ages -- to the Guttmacher Institute, our most trustworthy source of research on women’s reproductive rights. One of my personal favorites (now that I’ve discovered it through Tryst) is OMGYes -- a science based resource that has compiled research from over 2,000 women ages 18 to 95 in the techniques used to pleasure oneself. Can you believer it? They found that across the ages women share a lot of the same techniques but lack a common language to discuss or share them..? That’s a powerful realization that puts the magnitude of our silence into perspective.
We’re aligned with this work. Browsing through Tryst brought up a lot of reminders of our own work and that of our founding mentor, Riane Eisler. In her book Sacred Pleasure for instance she discusses the ways in which women’s sexual pleasure has been edited out of the Human Evolution story -- when in fact it’s the primary vector for evolutionary success. Not to mention the assault that has occurred on women’s rituals in order to edit out our sexual pleasure. Author Merlin Stone asserts in her book “When God was A Woman’ that women experienced a trauma that has taken several thousand years to recover from. And we’re still working in the healing process
We think being pussy positive = evolutionary awesomeness. Brava Jessica and WCG for creating Tryst! And thank you Chelsea for picking a fabulous t-shirt to rep the work of women worldwide ;-) Onward!
